It was clear from a young age that Jonathan Jr. was suffering from an autistic disorder. This manifested itself in physical aggression, temper tantrums and communication problems. Because of this disorder, Junior struggled to make sentences.

Out of desperation, after Jonathan Jr. hit all kids at a birthday party in one of his temer tantrums, mother Tavi and father Jonathan Sr. decided to try CBD oil.

That’s how Jonathan Jr. became one of the hundreds of autistic children worldwide that get treated with cannabis oil. It helped this young man so much, that he began forming complete sentences after just a few days. He can finally begin to fully develop. Results like these aren’t just anecdotal evidence, but are being proven in serious clinical trials as well.

To some it seems taboo. But a nationally renowned pain doctor says a four-letter word can ease aches and anxiety without the risk of addiction: H-E-M-P.

“It’s gonna be the next big thing,” said Dr. James Patrick Murphy, a former president of the Greater Louisville Medical Society who treats patients in Kentucky and Indiana.

Hemp won’t alleviate acute pain, Murphy said, but it can lessen more moderate pain — allowing some patients to reduce or stop taking addictive pain pills that fuel the heroin and opioid epidemic.

With Louisville losing an average of one person a day to drug overdoses, doctors and patients are scrambling to find safer ways to treat pain.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasn’t approved hemp products for use as medicine, and clinical trials on cannabinoids or CBD oil — extracted from the hemp flower —are pending. But Murphy and other doctors seethe oil as a promising option, and many people who are trying it for themselves say it works.

“People are coming in using this stuff,” Murphy said. “We have to learn about it.”

CBD oil has been credited with significantly reducing the severity of violent and potentially deadly epileptic seizures — especially in children. And hemp seeds are considered a “superfood,” rich in omegas and protein.

Yet the hemp plantis often confused and dismissed as a forbidden relative of marijuana.

“Cheers” actor Woody Harrelson grabbed national attention in June 1996 by planting four hemp seeds in Eastern Kentucky on a Lee County farm. His arrest was a stunt to highlight the difference between pot and hemp.

Both are the same plant species, Cannabis sativa. And they have the same pointy leafs and pungent scent. But hemp has a breadth of uses and a negligible amount of the mind-altering ingredient THC.

“Cars can run on hemp oil,” the actor wrote in a letter published in Courier Journal after his arrest. “Environmentally friendly detergents, plastics, paints, varnishes, cosmetics and textiles are already being made from it” in Europe.

Still, U.S. lawmakers would take nearly two decades longer to embrace it.

A federal law many dub the “2014 Farm Bill” cleared a path for its comeback.

Now Kentucky is among the nation’s top producers, trailing Colorado.

Brian Furnish, an eighth-generation tobacco farmer, was among the first in decades to legally plant hemp seeds in Kentucky soil. He grows and promotes hemp as an executive with Ananda Hemp, one of the commonwealth’s largest growers.

Furnish is not only a grower, he’s a consumer. He says a few drops of CBD oil ease his neck and back pain due to old football injuries and heavy lifting of feed sacks and other strenuous chores.

Now, he doesn’t work the farm without it.

Murphy is among the doctors who first learned about the potential benefits of hemp from their patients.

Curious, he did some research, reading about CBD oil and even testing it on himself for four days. Although he didn’t need it for pain, he verified it didn’t give him a buzz or any negative side effects.

He decided to recommend it to 200 patients.

About 90 percent of the 175 who tried CBD oil spray or pills reported benefits, such as fewer migraines and tension headaches and more tolerable leg and back pain and arthritis, he said. Others had more restful sleep and less anxiety.

But it’s not for everyone.

Murphy doesn’t recommend it to patients who are taking blood thinners or who have heart conditions.

And a small number of his patients opted to stop taking hemp after becoming dizzy. Others didn’t notice any relief from migraines or enough relief from severe pain.

Those who opted not to try hemp included an elderly patient whose husband wouldn’t let her try anything related to marijuana.

Dr. Bruce Nicholson, a Pennsylvania pain expert, also recommends hemp to many of his patients.

Dozens have reduced or stopped taking opioids, he said. Patients reported less trembling from neuropathy and relief from achy muscles. The doctor personally uses hemp several times a week, rubbing a cream on his achy joints.

“In the medical profession, we knew nothing about it,” said Nicholson, who began reading up on it about three years ago.

Nicholson estimates that as many as 80 percent of his patients suffering from chronic pain also face anxiety or depression. He said hemp can help that too.

“Now I recommend it every day to my patients,” he said.

Lisa Whitaker, 50, one of Murphy’s patients on disability for migraines and herniated discs, said CBD oil didn’t ease her severe headaches but did help her back pain.

It took four to six weeks before she noticed significant relief.

“This has been a lifesaver,” Whitaker said.

When we talk about medical benefits of cannabis, we can not avoid mentioning cannabidiol. CBD, as one of the main substances in the marijuana plant, does not have any intoxicating effects like THC, which makes it safe for us humans, but for animals as well.

Over the past few years, vets are more than willing to recommend CBD for treating a number of conditions in our pups.

Here are the top 5 medical benefits of this cannabinoid on our beloved four-legged friends.

  1. CBD reduces dog anxiety and fears
Separation anxiety, fear of fireworks and thunders, phobias… It can be all solved with the right dose of CBD. In fact, this marijuana product makes our fluffy friends relaxed and calm.
  2. Helps with arthritis and joint pain
A lot of dogs, most usually large breeds, tend to have mobility issues, especially while they age. Since inflammation and swelling is the main cause of joint pain, and CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory properties, it makes it perfect for these types of conditions.
  3. CBD helps dogs in battle with cancer
Let’s get something straight. CBD can not heal dogs from cancer but it can help reduce the pain, increase appetite and stop seizures.
  4. It helps with glaucoma, too
Glaucoma is a very common eye condition in dogs, especially in certain dog breeds. About 40 percent of dogs with glaucoma lose sight completely. But CBD helps keep the ocular pressure normal and prevent further issues.
  5. Reduces aggressive behaviour in dogs
First of all, aggression in dogs needs to be treated by taking behavioral classes with your pet. CBD is a great addition to this, as it helps dogs stay calm and not get triggered by certain situations.

Finds High Consumer Satisfaction with Using CBD to Treat a Variety of Medical Conditions

Brightfield Group, a premiere market research firm focused on the legal cannabis industry, in partnership with HelloMD, the leading digital healthcare platform for cannabis, today announced the results of a comprehensive study on CBD usage. The study surveyed 2,400 of HelloMD’s 150,000 community members on their usage, knowledge, perceptions, and misconceptions of CBD, making it the largest study of its kind. Overall, the study found that consumers of CBD are very satisfied with its effectiveness for treating a variety of medical conditions including insomnia, depression, anxiety, and joint pain.

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of two primary cannabinoids found in marijuana. Unlike THC, the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive, non-habit forming, and can be extracted from Hemp as well as marijuana. CBD is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-psychotic, and anti-convulsant properties.

“We are seeing an exponential rise in the interest of CBD products from our patient community—particularly among women,” said Dr. Perry Solomon, Chief Medical Officer of HelloMD. “While we still have much to learn about CBD, we cannot ignore this one fact; the majority of those using CBD product today receive great benefit. This has the potential for far-reaching consequences.”

Key findings from the study include:

  • CBD is most commonly used to treat insomnia, depression, anxiety, and joint pain
  • 42 percent of CBD users stopped using traditional medications and now use cannabis instead
  • 80 percent of CBD users found CBD be very or extremely effective for treatment
  • 90 percent of those surveyed said they would buy CBD-only products derived from marijuana

“This study is exciting because it shows there is potentially a huge barely-tapped market for CBD products that could improve the lives of many people. With further research and public education, CBD could be an effective alternative treatment for many people, particularly at a time when our nation is in the midst of an opioid crisis,” said Bethany Gomez, Director of Research for Brightfield Group.

The pain-relieving, non-psychoactive cannabis compound known as CBD is to be taken off WADA’s banned substance list in 2018.
“Cannabidiol is no longer prohibited,” World Ant-Doping Agency(WADA) said in a Sept. 29 statement, warning, however, that they will not discontinue the ban on THC. In theory, CBD Isolate products will be able to provide countless of athletes access to CBD’s myriad of benefits.

Earlier this year, Dr. David Bearman, a leading pioneer in the medical marijuana field, wrote in HuffPost saying he found CBD to be a “powerful anti-epileptic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, anti-nauseate, sleep aid, muscle relaxant, sedative.” and many more things.

A step in the right direction?

WADA’s recent announcement enables more and more athletes to look into the uses of CBD and harvest some of the claimed therapeutic purposes. It has proven to have anti-inflammatory properties — which in theory means it can relieve pain — and also is supposed to reduce anxiety dramatically, and possibly strengthen bones.

Plenty of former NFL players, too, have harvested the benefits of CBD, and the use of Cannabis products to aid their game. There is a new study led by Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan (Not In Picture) who sat down with CBS News to talk about the use of Cannabis products in the NFL. Watch the video, and read more about it more in our post here.

There are plenty of other athletes who might be glad to hear about the ban lift such as Nate Diaz, who drew worldwide attention after being watched vaping CBD during a post-fight press conference. “It’s CBD,” said Diaz at the time. “It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that.”

His brother, Nick Diaz has also been a significant cannabis advocate in the mixed-martial arts world. They have become well known for their open minds in the use of cannabis during their training routines.

The statement is to go into effect on Jan. 1. 2018 Until then, CBD is to remain prohibited under the parameters established by the list created in 2017.

Bipolar disorder is a serious condition that affects more than 5 million people in the US. Those who have it may swing from one emotion to the next, commonly between a manic or depressive mood. Managing bipolar disorder has become much easier as more research emerges on the topic, but there is still much to learn about how to control it. If you’re hoping to know all there is to know, we’ll give you the straight facts on whether or not CBD oil can be used to either augment current methods or replace them entirely.

Dispelling the Myths

There are a lot of myths that surround cannabis and psychological disorders. It’s true that many people who have bipolar disorder have used illegal cannabis to treat themselves without any proof that cannabis could help their symptoms. Some of these anecdotal tales have ended with disastrous results. In addition, some studies have suggested that not only is cannabis unhelpful when it comes to bipolar disorder treatment, it’s also actively harmful to the user. It can make depressive episodes last far longer than they would normally or increase the number of manic cycles that occur.

However, this is not the definitive word on whether or not CBD oil can help because CBD oil isn’t like traditional cannabis. Researchers who have worked with the product have noted that its antioxidant properties have been shown to combat oxidative stress that can lead to bipolar episodes. There is no question that CBD oil is not the cause behind the negative effects that are usually associated with using cannabis. When you break down the plant to pure CBD, you’re left with a substance that’s been shown to act like conventional antipsychotic drugs that are currently prescribed en masse to the public. Companies who make antipsychotic medications may well be helping to manage symptoms, but they also expose patients to a serious array of side effects. People who take it may experience everything from sores all over their body to trouble breathing to weight gain.

What Can Be Done

Not all researchers are convinced that CBD oil does anything for bipolar disorder, though no researchers have claimed that pure CBD oil makes it worse. If you were thinking of trying it, it seems clear that you should most certainly not be engaging in regular cannabis. This could actively make the problem worse, and increase your susceptibility to mood swings.

However, if you were interested in a more natural remedy, try a product that has specifically isolated the CBD from the THC. The jury is still out on the exact ratio that would need to be used, but it seems clear that CBD does the heavy hitting while THC does very little (or nothing at all.) The good news is that pure CBD oil is available, and it doesn’t require a doctor to sign off on its use. While a medical professional’s advice may still be helpful to you to determine your specific dosage, you are free to experiment with it to see if it works for you.

The Bottom Line

There are some out there who claim they were able to leave their antipsychotic medications behind based purely on the healing powers of CBD oil, but again, there’s still much to be done before this is recommended to anyone. Much of what researchers have to go on is still highly anecdotal, even though there some documented ways that CBD oil has been proven to help with a variety of mood disorders.

The small study, which tested nine adult male volunteers, was first published in June of 2017. The research was conducted by scientists at England’s University of Nottingham. A research team compared the effects of CBD versus a placebo control on a variety of different cardiovascular functions. A high dose of CBD was used – 600 milligrams, to be exact.

The CBD was administered in just one single dose.

The team looked at CBD’s effect on blood pressure, heart rate, forearm skin blood flow, and stroke volume. Stroke volume is a measurement of blood pumped from the left ventricle of the heart. The left ventricle is the portion of the heart responsible for getting oxygen-rich blood out of the heart and into other organs.

Participants underwent different stress tests and researchers measured their cardiac responses. One stress test was an exercise test and another was a test using cold temperatures.

The take aways

As a positive, CBD successfully reduced systolic blood pressure while both resting and under stress. This confirmed what the scientists had expected – CBD blunted the cardiac responses to stress.

Blood pressure typically increases in stressful situations. This puts you at greater risk for a heart attack and can have negative effects on heart health over time. The finding that CBD can reduce blood pressure after a single dose is exciting, but not surprising.

The compound, along with other cannabis components, are vasodilators. That means that they can release tension in the arteries and allow more blood to flow into organs. In theory, this could allow more oxygen to flow into tissues and possibly help those with conditions like hypertension.

However, the researchers did come across some results that warrant further research. While the molecule did lower blood pressure, it also caused an increase in heart rate. This was coupled with a decreased stroke volume. A decreased stroke means that the heart has to pump faster to put out oxygen-rich blood.

With exercise, the researchers found that CBD increased heart rate by 10 beats per minute. Yet, the team found no difference between the total output of nutritious blood in CBD consumers or those given the placebo. The authors write,

We have shown for the first time that to our knowledge that, in humans, acute administration of CBD reduces resting blood pressure, with a lower stroke volume and a higher heart rate.

According to the study authors, earlier studies have used the same dosage of CBD and the compound did not increase heart rate. In this study, men who had never tried cannabis were given a very high dose of CBD for the first time. In earlier studies, consumers given high-dose CBD were familiar with cannabis and its effects.

The researchers suggest that consumers may become tolerant to the effects of CBD on heart rate over time. Still, this research confirms that the compound successfully reduces blood pressure and holds potential as a future heart medicine. CBD’s effects on heart rate and what that ultimately means for consumers will need to be investigated.

David Wells has developed different pains and problems over his career as a professional baseball player. It’s easy for David and many other athletes to get opiates or painkillers — and to get addicted to them.  When David discovered the natural and non-addictive CBD, he didn’t have to think twice about trying it.

Chronic pain, cancer, seizures/epilepsy, and sleep disorders are four major health conditions that millions of people suffer from – and CBD oil may help them all! It’s important to understand why, before getting into how they may help. The National Institutes of Health explains the ECS as, “a recently discovered signaling system comprising the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, their intrinsic lipid ligands, endocannabinoids and the associated enzymatic machinery.” The ECS is closely tied to many systems in our body, including the immune system.

  • Chronic Pain

Rheumatology described how CBD can help the pain from Rheumatoid Arthritis all the way back in 2006. Seventy-Five patients were screened, and fifty-eight of them were eligible to undergo the study. Thirty-one of them received cannabinoid treatments and twenty-seven received a placebo. The study stated, “In comparison with placebo, the cannabis based medicine produced statistically significant improvements in pain on movement, pain at rest, quality of sleep.” Additionally, there were no serious adverse effects or withdrawals within the treatment group.

  • Cancer

Cancer is becoming one of the most studied diseases with CBD. In this study, the focus was on Kaposi sarcoma, a cancer that causes lesions in the soft tissues. The study focused on “infection of endothelial cells (ECs) by Kaposi sarcoma and on the growth and apoptosis of Kaposi sarcoma-infected ECs”. CBD was found to reduce proliferation and induced apoptosis (scheduled cell death) in infected EC’s. CBD also inhibited the expression of certain proteins, receptors, ligands, and vascular endothelial growth factor C, which “suggests a potential mechanism by which CBD exerts its effects on Kaposi sarcoma-infected endothelium.”

  • Seizures/ Epilepsy

CBD has become widely known as an extremely effective seizure medication. In this study, 214 people were studied and completed 12 weeks with cannabidiol treatment. All subjects did not respond to current pharmaceutical treatments, and the average age was 11 years old. During the study, seizures decreased by an average of 54%. It should also be noted that only 10% of the people included in the study had minor side effects, including sleepiness, diarrhea, or decreased appetite.

  • Sleep disorders

This study was specifically performed on Canadian military personnel with PTSD. A double-blind study was completed using nabilone capsules (NAB), which is a synthetic cannabinoid, or a placebo. They were followed for 7 weeks, then allowed two weeks on their own, and then followed again for 7 more weeks receiving the opposite treatment.
